From Sirens to Seagrass: The Myths and Ecosystems of the Aegean

Echoes of the Past, Protection for the Future

From Sirens to Seagrass: The Myths and Ecosystems of the Aegean explores the fascinating intersection of mythology and marine life in one of the world’s most iconic seas. Steeped in ancient stories of sirens, sea gods, and mythical creatures, the Aegean has long been a place where the boundaries between folklore and nature blur.

This project uncovers the region’s rich marine ecosystems, such as the vital seagrass meadows, while weaving together the cultural tales that have shaped humanity’s relationship with the sea. Through this journey, we will celebrate the Aegean’s legendary biodiversity and explore how myth, tradition, and conservation efforts intertwine to protect these fragile underwater worlds.

The Mediterranean is a treasure trove of historical sites deeply connected to the ocean, where ancient civilizations once thrived along its shores. From the sunken cities of Alexandria and Thonis-Heracleion to the ancient shipwrecks scattered across the seafloor, these underwater relics offer a glimpse into the past, revealing the pivotal role the sea played in trade, exploration, and cultural exchange.

Ruins of Phoenician ports, Greek temples, and Roman villas dot the coastlines, each telling the story of how maritime routes shaped empires and connected distant cultures. The Mediterranean’s historical sites, both above and below the surface, stand as testaments to the ocean’s profound influence on human history and the enduring relationship between people and the sea.

Project Objectives

Document Changes in Marine Life

Investigate how the Aegean’s marine life has changed over time, focusing on the decline of key species and ecosystems, and how historical human activities, from ancient fisheries to modern industrial practices, have shaped these changes.

Advocate for Conservation

Focus on the conservation of key Aegean ecosystems, especially seagrass meadows, emphasizing their critical role for biodiversity, particularly endangered species, coastal protection, local community livelihoods and carbon sequestration.

Explore the Mythological Legacy

Dive into the ancient myths and legends of the Aegean, examining how stories of sirens, gods, and sea creatures shape cultural perceptions of marine life and influence conservation efforts today.
